"Some sounds cease being struck or uttered altogether, disappearing with changes in both the natural and man-made environment. And it is these lost sounds --- as well as the ways in which sounds can (or cannot) be preserved, documented, or distributed through recording devices or written description or transcription --- with which the text you are now reading (or the broadcast you are now hearing) is concerned. In an attempt to draw closer these two opposing forms of documentation --- the printed manuscript and the spoken broadcast --- as well as expose their specific limitations and capabilities, this text will be read, recorded, and transcribed; and this transcription, in turn, read, recorded, and transcribed, etcetera."
